Malaysian Super Series 2011 - Round 3
Event: Malaysian Super Series 2011 - Round 3
Date: 2-3 July 2011
Location: Sepang International Circuit
Again another super late posting from me but late better than never. I had been busy ever since i relocated to Singapore. Here was another local Malaysia event that managed to attract quite a number entries from South east region. Just a slight introduction to this series, it consist of GT class, Touring class, Classic class, Superbikes, Superstock bikes and Supersport bikes.
To spice up the event even more, Petronas had organized a special one make formula experience series where 10 driver will be racing against each other in the same car. Most these driver are kart racer whom race in local series Rotax Max Challenge.
It is another effort to give local driver a chance to gain more experience. Perhaps there will be a malaysian Formula 1 driver again in the near future.
It is a short race with only 10 lap. Therefore, getting the right setup and blistering fast qualifying lap will give the driver a chance to secure a podium and perhaps a full time drive in other race team as many talent scout are here to spot for talented youngster.
In this short 10 lap race, it was extreme hard for photographer to move around the track to photograph the race. I only managed a handful of picture which is not bad.
Now let move on the other class, the touring class. One of the most competitive class in the series, the touring class line up were largely filled up by participant from ATCS or Asian Touring Car Series.
As usually, in any Touring series, you will find Honda. Here is no exception. The line up literally fill with Honda be it Honda Accord Euro R....
...or Civic Euro R. Honda never away from Touring class racing.
In the sea of Honda, there are 2 Chevrolet challenging the honda driver for a place in the podium.
Another note here is most of this driver are self sponsor. So money people, please put some of your money to these people. These guy show they have what it take.
This is how you mount a spoiler to a hatchback.....
After spending large part of my time in the pits, the Touring class race was about the start. Each driver now turn to their game face, deep focus and dead serious.
Car are lining up and ready to go.
I decided to take a short walk to toward outer turn 15 to catch some action shot.
Before approaching turn 15, there is a long straight therefore, each driver will had to brake hard to enter the corner. And some driver will dive into this corner.
And sometime you might see these car on three wheel....
...or brake too late till the wheel locked.
And some will kick out dust in order to blind the opponent.
Due to the large width of the track, there are several overtaking line going into this turn 15. It has enough space for 2 cars.
As a normal thing that will happen to touring car race, there will be carnage. Here, one of the car blow it engine and caught fire. Luckily the driver managed to get out in time.
Safety car was immediately deployed.
Damage bodywork is a norm for touring car race.
At the end, it was number 91 Honda Civic Euro R from Buddy Club Racing took the win.
During the break between races, i went to the pit again to checkout the Classic Car and GT Car. Due to lack of entries Classic Car race, GT Class race and production touring class race will run together. Here is Mazda RX7 FC. It look more like a dragster than a road racing car.
Next to it was Audi R8 race car. Damn i love the look of this car.
Porsche 911 GT3 whee-less.
Another Porsche without wheel.
How about some open top race car. Radical.
The guy from proton motorsport division R3 bought out their race car to flex some muscle.
What do you think of this Mini Cooper race car? Cute isn't it. But pity, this car is no runner. It had some mechanical faulty and retired for the weekend.
Little that i know, i had reach the bike pit area. It is quite funny sometime to see there is Angry Bird faced bike. Sorry i had little knowledge about bike. Therefore, i can't tell what bike it this.'
Each pit garage was share between maybe 10 bike. So, it is quite packed in some pit garage.
Some rider trying to do last minute adjustment and some taking fresh rubber from the storage.
Soon the big boy are ready and making their way to the starting grid.
Then off there go. Here is turn 2 where the bike was doing almost 45 degree.
For the supersport category, there aren't many participant. Here is one of them which i shot through the fence at turn 1.
Sometime you have to give these guy a thumb up for their bravery.
This is the way to make yourself more aerodynamic.
The next race was the SuperStock bike category or smaller CC bike. It has the most riders. Above picture said it all.
These bike was powered by a 125cc engine and running very skinny tires. You have to amaze on how they able this.
Soon after that, it was the mixed class race turn to have a blast in the circuit.
Check out the Audi R8 rear end.
While the GT race car occupying the front row, the production class race car and classic car make up the remaining line up.
In GT class, there were only 3 Porsche and 1 Audi R8 and they pull away quite a big gap after only just 1 lap.
I decided to camp at turn 15 as it is the most shaded area in the track. Pardon me as the weather are extremely hot that day. Here was Number 12 Porsche 911 GT3 approaching Turn 15.
Dilango Racing's Porsche fighting against oversteer in turn 15.
Due to Porsche 911 engine is at the rear of the car. The Porsche has more corner exit traction than the mid engine Audi R8.
Both proton R3 cars fighting against each other to win the class. And R3 confirmed that both car will be entering the coming Sepang 1000km endurance race.
Dragster look alike Mazda Rx7 FC existing turn 15.
In the end, it was Porsche took all the podium spot for GT class with car number 7 Audi R8 failed to finish. Both Dilango Racing's Porsche finish in podium position with car number 24 took second place and car number 12 third. Car number 71 Porsche took the first podium spot.
It was a joyful outing for me to experience these races in close perspective. Special thank to SIC (Sepang International Circuit) and Buggershot. I do hope i don't bored your guy with my poor writing skill. Till then thanks for reading my blog.
